We always like to see what MSI is up to dedicated gaming PC maker, and CES is a great place to do that. At the show we got a closer look at the next MSI GS66 Stealth and GE66 Raider laptops. MSI couldn’t say exactly when and for how much these laptops would be available, but there’s plenty to look forward to.
The MSI GS66 Stealth is the newest in one of our favorite lines of devices, the latest being the GS65 Stealth Thin that we reviewed last year. The weight has risen from 4 to 4.6 pounds but it’s still shocking how much MSI hardware has packed into this thin and light machine (for a gaming laptop).
The upcoming GS66 Stealth takes as much of the battery as it can. For plane travel, the 99.9Wh power pack only takes it below the legal maximum of 100Wh.
The GS66 Stealth is also taking a mellower approach to its style, discarding the accents to gold. It still has an 180-degree hinge and keys which are backlit.
New to the next version: Top-firing sound speakers. Three fans and seven heat pipes are also to be found inside to manage thermals. The fans have available the thinnest blades, just 0.1 mm, and 67 on each fan, according to MSI — that is a number.
Here’s another bonus: On the current version, the GPU and CPU are reversed, but the future version makes them fully accessible, along with the M.2 slots.
In addition, the MSI GS66 will feature the latest Intel H 10th-gen components, and the latest Nvidia graphics. Those sections are so fresh that we can’t tell all the titles. Hold on listening.
Like the GE65 Raider, its swift predecessor, MSI’s GE66 Raider is less discreet in flaunting its gaming chops. The new model will feature front-facing RGB light strip for all to see.
Although the new generation body is smaller, it features galore ports— USB-A and USB-C, plus SD, Gigabit ethernet, both standard DisplayPort and mini-DisplayPort. Some of these ports appear on the back of the Raider product line, a new location for the laptop.
